1. Primary windbreak
Above: Western arm of primary windbreak in 2014. Deciduous trees LHS, include Quercus palustris (planted 1996) and Ulmus parviflora (planted 1997). Evergreen conifers RHS are Cupressus x leylandii (planted 1996) - these make up the windbreak’s first row. Distant landscape features Peak Alone (RHS) and Wadbilliga Plateau (centre).
Above. Corner of primary windbreak. Eucalyptus saligna (LHS) in 2010, 12 years after planting. Fraxinus griffithi (RHS) 16 years after planting – these act as draught-stoppers, with the taller C. cunninghamiana emerging behind in the mid-row.
Opposite. Closer view of E. saligna in southern arm of windbreak. There are two rows, one grown for timber. Harvesting should not unduly influence the effectiveness of the windbreak, as a spurt in growth from the remaining trees could be expected as they are ‘released’ from competition. To renovate and reinforce the windbreak prior to harvesting additional ‘understorey’ (Hakea salicifolia) and windward plantings (C. cunninghamiana) are now in progress.
